Free Photo Borders for Photoshop

May 24, 2007
This method will show you how to create artistic borders in photoshop with a slight grunge look to it. The best thing about this method is that it is very easy to do and you don't have to spend any money on expensive photo border plugins or filters.

Step 1: Open up your picture and select the entire picture by pressing ctrl-a or going to Select -> All.

Step 2: Make a border selection by going to Select -> Modify -> Contract and enter a value of 13. Modify this value according to the size of your picture.

Step 3: Enter quick mask mode by pressing q

Step 4: Go to Filter -> Filter Gallery and choose one of the filters. I chose the Conte' Crayon Filter under sketch.

Step 5: Once you have applied the filter press q to exit the quick mask mode.

Step 6: Create a Layer Mask by pressing the layer mask button at the bottom of the layers palette.

Step 7: Create a new Layer below your main layer and fill it with the color of your choice. Black or white works best.

Here are some other borders I created using the filters in the Filter Gallery.

Thanks, this was exactly what I needed and the steps were simple. The only thing not detailed was to invert the selection before hitting "q" for mask

Mike, thanks for that tip! I'm quite new to PS and I had to work my way around the invert thing.
