Grunge Borders for Lightroom

August 05, 2008
Since I posted the set of Free Grunge Borders for Photoshop, I have been inundated by questions around how to add grunge borders to Lightroom, and if that's even possible.

Well, I've decided to post a little tutorial on how to add grunge borders to your photos in Lightroom, and I've also modified the existing grunge borders. So not only will you know how to add grunge borders in Lightroom, you're also getting a set of high resolution grunge borders for free!

This tutorial works in Lightroom 1 and 2.

Here's two free grunge borders you can use in Lightroom :

Free Lightroom Grunge Border #1

Free Lightroom Grunge Border #2

Step 1:
Select the picture you want to use, and switch to the print view in Lightroom.

Step 2:
By default, Lightroom will display your name as the identity plate on your pictures. We're going to change this to a graphic (in this case it will be the grunge borders). So just right-click (ctrl-click in mac) anywhere in the checkered identity plate area, and select edit.

Step 3:
In the Identity plate editor window, select "use a graphical identity plate", and point to one of the grunge borders available for download above. (Make sure they are uncompressed and ready to use in a folder)

Step 4:
Uncheck the "render behind image" and "render on every image" checkboxes in the overlay panel, and scale the border to fit around your image. In this case I used a scale of 100% and the fit was perfect, but you might have to play around with it slightly depending on your image dimensions.

That's all there is to it. As always, please add your comments to this article.

In Lightroom 2 the psd image doesn't show up in the folder. If drag and dropped it comes up as unsupported image.

Thanks for this, I've been looking for free borders for ages, but it won't work for me.

When I try to load the 'graphical identity plate' (ie border), it doesn't appear and I can't load it as PSD is not a supported file type and it won't let me change the 'show files' menu. Does anyone know why this might be?

Cheers!
