The basic style follows the treatment understood by Tim Holloway and Fiona Ross in their deal with the Adobe Devanagari household. Due to the adherence to this style reasoning, Adobe Gurmukhi is an extreme departure in text typeface style for Gurmukhi script, the most typical writing system which is utilized to represent the Punjabi language (as opposed to the Arabic-based Shamukhi script). Whereas practically all contemporary text typefaces for Gurmukhi are strictly low contrast, bordering on monolinear design, Adobe Gurmukhi tries to fuse calligraphic information, which can be readily seen in standard Punjabi manuscripts, with modern proportions and character constructions. The reasoning behind this method is to reintroduce some of the appearance of regulated letterforms to Punjabi text typography while maintaining letter shapes familiar and clear to today's readers. Unlike comparable Indian writing systems such as Devanagari or Bengali, Gurmukhi calligraphy is not highly influenced by any one design of letter building and construction. For that reason, in choosing writing samples on which to base the design for this type household, Hunt favored those more in line with the calligraphy of related Indian scripts. The Adobe Gurmukhi fonts adhere to the Unicode requirement for character encoding and take advantage of the technology of OpenType to produce appropriate script shaping and accurate mark positioning. The resulting typeface is an important addition to the cannon of Gurmukhi type that can be used effectively in a broad variety of typographic environments. Adobe Gurmukhi works best in text setting, for which it was created, however the letter shapes remain fascinating and elegant when set at bigger display screen sizes.
