Setting Fraktur free
Bruno Bernard designed Adso in between 2005 and 2010. Integrating the modernity of uncluttered shapes with the noble appeal of Blackletter structures, it is a robust yet improved screen typeface.
Adso is the very first arise from Bernard's research into the possibilities of reestablishing Gothic scripts to the contemporary world. Of course, Blackletter faces are still seen today, but with narrow functions: either representing a specific rebellious culture (e.g. music and tattoos), or to symbolize the credibility of a standard savoir-faire (e.g catering trade and antique dealerships). Minimal to these narrow specific niches the design is pressed to the fringes of history.
Adso is a Blackletter that invites broader usage. It is a typeface these days, extremely clear thanks to its basic shapes, and extremely appealing thanks to its refined curves. Poised for purposes more diverse than the traditional Fraktur, Adso offers a fresh look on our typographic heritage, and expands the graphic designer's field of experimentation.
