The original idea for Alda originated from exploring an alternative technique to creating different typeface weights by adapting the characteristics of physical items. I was interested to discover out how far this might be pressed before the letters ended up being a parody of what they referenced. Initially I took this treatment very literally, with the boldest weight expressing the tension of bent steel, and the lightest being as spineless as a rubber band. This enabled me to infuse each weight with distinct attributes, where the strong is robust and angular, and the light is delicate and soft.
