Hermann Zapf created
Aldus for the Stempel foundry in 1954 as a companion to his Palatino typefaces. Initially created as a screen typeface, Palatino gained appeal as a text typeface as well. Thinking Palatino to be too vibrant for settings at small point sizes, Zapf created the lighter weight
Aldus to much better suit text settings.
The typeface is called for
Aldus Manutius, the innovative fifteenth-century Italian printer/publisher.
