Jim Ford was practicing drawing with a new brush pen when the motivation for Alfie came to him. He had filled numerous pages in a notebook with letters and, at one point, recognized that there may be a typeface among them. As it turned out, there were four. The procedure, however, wasn't selecting one design and modifying it. The makings of all the designs were on the pages. It was just a matter of choosing out the best collection of characters to construct the structures for the 4 tastes of Alfie.
Because they share the very same household roots, each style in the Alfie household can be paired and intermixed. Ford confesses that there's a hint of Emil Klumpp's 1950s Murray Hill typeface (https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/bitstream/murray-hill/) in the Alfie family. Simply enough to offer the style a 50s vibe. (Some styles never head out of style.)
