Francesco Canovaro created Asgard as a way to mix his passion for the raw energy of extra vibrant sans serif typography with the expressivity of high contrast and calligraphy-inspired letterforms. He built the typeface around a strong geometric sans skeleton, to make the letters feel strong and effective while utilizing wood-type vernacular services to fix density through high contrast details. The typeface name was picked as a homage to the mythical homeland of the Norse Gods, evoking a land of fierce warriors, power and strength - however also of divine, fragile beauty.

Thanks to the help of Andrea Tartarelli and Mario de Libero the initial style was extended along with the style area, broadening the variety of weights and widths with a 'workhorse typeface' method, and including also an inclined axis to experiment with italics. The outcome is a super-family of 9 styles of 8 weights for a total of 72 fonts, each featuring an extended set of 968 glyphs covering over 200 languages utilizing Latin, Greek and Cyrillic scripts. The 3 variation axes (width, weight, slant) are likewise all accessible in a variable font style version that is consisted of with the entire family.

This offers the designer a complete variety of alternatives for typesetting, with the Roman and Fit widths providing standard screen and text-sized options, and the Wide width adding more screen and entitling choices. The inclusion of backslant italic styles gives Asgard an additional possibility to include its voice to the typographic combination. To match this, all Asgard typefaces have been provided a full set of Open Type Features including standard and discretionary ligatures, stylistic sets, positional characters and case delicate forms.

Dynamic and meaningful, Asgard is a super-family that handles to look brutal and refined at the same time, estimating the vernacular typographic practices of letterpress print while expressing the contemporary zeitgeist.
