The design of ATF Headline Gothic recalls the bold, condensed gothic screen faces of the 19th century, but with more refinement in its information than lots of large types of the time (typically wood type). Its most identifiable characteristic is the restrained, high-waisted M, with short diagonal strokes that end with their point well above the standard; this prevents the in some cases confined appearance of a strong condensed M with a deep "V" in the center, typical in many similar headline faces.
The digital ATF Heading Gothic is available in a single weight, all caps, like its predecessor, however offers 2 styles: one crisply drawn, and a "Round" variation with softer corners, to recommend a more "printed" feel, similar to wood type. Obviously, in either style it consists of a full modern-day character set, including signs such as the Euro, Ruble, and Rupee, that didn't exist in 1936.
