Carrig began its life in 1998. I was working for a style agency in Cork, Ireland and was offered a brand-new brand identity task for a lakeside hotel in County Kerry. While checking out the hotel I made numerous sketches of the environments and upon returning to the studio, it was clear that my greatest ideas for the identity would be based on these freehand drawings. I desired a timeless, rough, hand-drawn typeface to complement this style however at that time, the studio didn't have anything ideal, so I chose to draw my own. I discovered a Trajan-esque typeface that I really liked the appearance of in an old calligraphy workbook. I approach drawing my own variation and after that digitised it.

Once the client had seen and approved my style, I began dealing with producing a total all caps typeface to use for the hotel's stationery. With 'carrig' being the Gaelic word for 'rock', my new typeface was all the more appropriate as it had the look of letterforms that had actually been carved into stone and weathered by time.

With the task completed and the customer happy, Carrig then beinged in my unused fonts folder for numerous years ... but there was always a nagging feeling at the back of my mind that I need to do something more with it. So, in the autumn of 2014, I finally set about doing simply that and created the font household you now find at MyFonts.

Carrig's kind and structure was affected by a hybrid of Timeless Roman and Garalde typeface styles. The original calligraphic aspects from the 1998 version of Carrig have actually been retained to include personality-as can be seen in the serifs, strokes, spurs, terminals and open bowls. Perhaps its most unique quality is a high x-height integrated with fairly brief ascenders.

I desired Carrig to right away resonate with the reader and have actually created it to be familiar and friendly. I picture designers may select Carrig as an alternative to such typefaces as Trajan, Garamond and Baskerville.

I see Carrig as mainly a screen typeface for titles/headlines in printed materials. I would likewise love to see it being used for branding, packaging and marketing material and am eager to speak with designers who use it in their own work.
