Cast had its start in 2007 during Dominique Kerber's Typedesign research study (CAS Typedesign) at the ZHdK in Zurich (Switzerland). After graduation, Dominique Kerber continued working on this project to launch the fully established font style in March 2011. In June 2018 the type household was extended by the (real) italic. The expert exchange with his previous fellow student Alex Meier in a shared studio used Dominique Kerber enrichment in this prolonged process.
The idea of Cast is to combine the optical and formal requirements to a key in small text with the ones for screen or signage use. Are ink traps essential for example? Do they look nice in big sizes? How does optimum legibility behave in differing dimensions? What technical opportunities are there? Cast gives its own (possible) responses to these and ideally some other questions in typography.
