Chapman is the result of spending too numerous hours looking at the typically all-capital engraver typefaces from long-gone foundries. The large serifs, high contrast, and numerous widths seem to have so much character however also stay so neutral.
From these recommendations, Chapman started to emerge. It seemed natural that the lowercase would be based on a Scotch Roman design, much like the initial all-capital faces. Chapman does not pull directly from any one source but from the genres themselves.
It was, from the beginning, the objective to produce a typeface that would be reasonably neutral but not boring; an adaptable option that works anywhere and, depending on the picked width, can be squeezed or stretched to fit anywhere. The tricks of the initial designs are tamed in some places and turned up in others. The result is something familiar however unique and contemporary.
