Around 1880 Ferdinand Theinhardt developed this Grotesk for usage in scientific publications. By designing his typeface for the "Royal-Prussian-Academy of Sciences in Berlin" Ferdinand Theinhardt received immediate acceptance and appraisal for his brand-new typeface. His own foundry "Theinhardt Schriftgiesserei" published 4 weights. Five years later on he sold his foundry to the "Bro Mosig and Oskar Mommen". In 1908 "Mosig and Mommen" was offered again. In those days letters had to have serifs in order to be real typefaces. "Sans" typefaces of that time were declined as "genuine typefaces", they were something "odd". In German odd translates to "grotesk"! The font was used for "Accidentien" (small typesetting tasks), like leaflets, business cards, letterheads and so on. It was a strange typeface for small jobs.

Last year in Berlin I found some type-samples of Theinhardts Grotesk in Erik Spiekermanns comprehensive library and was instantly dedicated to restore the initial typeface with most of its disparities. I added some weights and corresponding italic cuts with a light slant. I developed small-caps, all type of numbers as well as ligatures and currency signs, I likewise included the required diacritics in order to make the typeface usable for many latin-writing languages.

Classic Sans 12-Pack includes the following cuts: XLight and XLight-Italic, Light and Light-Italic, Medium and Medium-Italic, Roman and Roman-Italic, Strong and Bold-Italic in addition to Black and Black-Italic.
