Around 1880 Ferdinand Theinhardt created this Grotesk for use in clinical publications. By developing his typeface for the Royal-Prussian-Academy of Sciences in Berlin Ferdinand Theinhardt got immediate acceptance and appraisal for his new typeface. His own foundry "Theinhardt Schriftgiesserei" released four weights. Five years later on he offered his foundry to the Brothers Mosig and Oskar Mommen. In 1908 Mosig and Mommen was offered again. In those days letters needed to have serifs in order to be genuine typefaces. Sans typefaces of that time were not accepted as genuine typefaces, they were something strange. In German odd translates to grotesk! The typeface was used for Accidentien (small typesetting jobs), like leaflets, service cards, letterheads and so on. It was an odd font for small jobs.
Last year in Berlin I discovered some type-samples of Theinhardts Grotesk in Erik Spiekermanns extensive library and was quickly committed to revive the original typeface with most of its disparities. I added some weights and corresponding italic cuts with a light slant. I designed small-caps, all sort of numbers along with ligatures and currency symbols, I likewise added the needed diacritics in order to make the typeface usable for the majority of latin-writing languages.
Classic Sans 12-Pack includes the following cuts: XLight and XLight-Italic, Light and Light-Italic, Medium and Medium-Italic, Roman and Roman-Italic, Vibrant and Bold-Italic in addition to Black and Black-Italic. The Medium weight is lighter than the Roman and can be used to typeset a lighter however tough body-copy.
