The face was created by William W. Jackson and launched by MacKellar, Smiths and Jordan Type Foundry of Samson Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1886. MS&J was founded originally as Binny & & Ronaldson in 1796 and later referred to as The Johnson Type Foundry. Cruickshank has a strong late Victorian taste without the luxury of many font styles of the duration. In its simpleness and clearness, it may be viewed as a precursor to the Art Nouveau style that would develop a years later on.
