Dead HistoryDesigner: P. Scott Makela

Developed by P. Scott Makela, Dead History is a display font household. This typeface has two designs and was released by Emigre.

Makela created this typeface in the period throughout which digital procedures were ending up being accepted as mainstream tools for graphic and communication designers. The past, specifically in typography, is often a motivation for contemporary designers; not so for Makela, whose Dead History style indicates the end of a period of typically produced typefaces. It personifies a new attitude in type production marked by the design of hybrid typefaces which are largely the outcome of the computer system's abilities to function as the perfect putting together tool.

Started by Makela while studying in the graduate design program at Cranbrook, he began his design of Dead History by mashing together two existing digital fonts-- Linotype's Centennial and Adobe's V.A.G. Rounded-- to create something entirely brand-new and unforeseen. It went through numerous stages of assembly and disassembly before it was accredited to Emigre Fonts in early 1994. There it was finally redrawn from scratch and finished by Zuzana Licko.

In 2011 Dead History was one of 23 digital typefaces consisted of in the irreversible architecture and style collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
