The fonts Why Square, Simply Square and DesignerRound, Latin and Cyrillic variations were produced throughout the barrage of Yugoslavia in 1999. It began when my child Nikola, student of Academy of Applied Arts (at the time) asked me to draw letters from his sketch for some logotype. It was great and I recognized that it might be more than logotype. As there was no other work, I began the Square project.
I ended up Why Square in 3 weights, the war went on, so I made Initials and SmallCaps versions, the war went on, so I did the fourth weight, the war went on, so I did all the four weights in the Cyrillic variant, the war went on, so I did 4 weights of the Simply Square typeface (which I didn't strategy in the beginning), the war went on, so I did the same in the Cyrillic variant, the war went on, then it struck me that I was irritated when a typeface had just 4 weights so I did 4 more in both the Latin and the Cyrillic versions, the war went on and I understood that it would be great for Why Square to have its alternative in the DesignerRound font, i.e. 4 weights once again in 3 versions plus the Cyrillic, and when I was nearly finished, the war ended.
By then I had made 56 fonts; who knows what might have occurred if the war had gone on? Several years ago Linotype certified Why Square and Just Square.
