Sign painters are the real heroes of lettering, for they make the alphabet and design fit the task. Printers and design artists were restricted by metal and wood type; that is up until image lettering, then digital type opened up untouched territories in style possibilities.
There is an unique beauty (and nowadays quite much a lost art) to hand-lettering word copy in such a way that draws the eye like an arrow to a target. Even a simple sanserif such as Eckhardt Poster Text JNL can have the result of that hand lettering when used to posters and pages with plenty of white space and matching type styles of the period.
