Eckhardt Poster Text JNL continues Jeff Levine's series of indication painter-oriented font styles, called in honor of his buddy Albert Eckhardt, Jr. (who ran Allied indications in Miami, Florida from 1959 until his death).
.Sign painters are the real heroes of lettering, for they make the alphabet and design fit the job. Printers and layout artists were restricted by metal and wood type; that is up until picture lettering, then digital type opened up undiscovered territories in design possibilities.
.There is a special appeal (and nowadays basically a lost art) to hand-lettering word copy in a way that draws the eye like an arrow to a target. Even a basic sanserif such as Eckhardt Poster Text JNL can have the effect of that hand lettering when used to posters and pages with a lot of white area and matching type styles of the period.
