Originally designed for the European annual Illustration Now, Exocet is based on primitive Greek stone sculpting. I never truly comprehended the concept of serif type till I experienced drawing it. There are various theories as to how serifs came about. One attributes it to the pull of the brush at the end of the letter, another explains that producing a good sharp ending at the end of a stem when carving in stone led to the concept of serifs. So I attempted both techniques. Dealing with the brush worked for seeing exactly how the peculiarities of a typeface come about. Stone sculpting I found a far more informing experience, for different factors. Initially, it is completely different from developing type on the Macintosh. It also involves a real physical effort and I felt like I was leaving my marks forever. It raised concerns about the truth of type. Is type sculpted in stone more "real" than a picture of type?
