Sometimes a terrific lettering design comes from a source that is less than desirable.
Up until the late 1920s, it was a popular practice in American songwriting to use African Americans as the subject of structures using denigrating styles, words and even overstated character illustrations on the covers of the released sheet music.
One such example of what was considered "home entertainment" for its time was a piece entitled "Little Black Me".
While this now socially and morally unacceptable piece of forgettable tripe is collected by some just for the historic documentation of the times they reflected, one good "positive" came out of this unfavorable chapter of our nation's musical heritage:
.The gorgeous flower ornamented letters in the tune's title has actually yielded Fancy Free JNL.
.Originally hand-lettered on an arc, these stimulated Roman letters have been re-drawn, and are used in both the routine design and a companion variation with the decoration got rid of for lettering that is less ornate.
