To satisfy the growing demands of commerce, type founders in 1830s London presented a variety of new fonts which deserted the conventional nib-informed design. The majority of radical were bold, capital-only designs with practically no stroke contrast, removed bare of serifs. To all intents and purposes these minimal expressions of utility were similar to 20th century functionalism. Recontextualizing one of the initial sans font styles, Shinn uses an alternative proposal to the received myth of modernism.
