When I was in marketing-- prior to computer systems-- a really time consuming part of my day-to-day work was sketching headings. I utilized to be able to sketch headings in Franklin Gothic, Times, Futura, Helvetica and numerous scripts.
We had a kind of big inverted camera-- which we called Lucy. We forecasted the alphabet onto a sheet of transparent paper, described the letters with a fineliner and then filled them in. It was very tedious work, however the resulting headline had its own charm and we had a long-term race going on who was best and fastest. I won the majority of the time! They used to call me the fastest 'Magic Marker' this side of the Atlantic.
Great days, much like today!
