For an artist as achieved as Gradl was, he is really hard to research. There simply does not seem to have actually been much composed about him. The jeweler shows up in many of his typeface styles. They exhibit a sculptural quality as if they were designed in clay (or gold) rather than drawn on paper. His monograms, specifically, reflect that quality. Those displayed in plates 112 through 116 in Petzendorfer actually appear to have been developed specifically for producing in the kind of silver or gold pendents. Of the initial letters that came out of Germany during this period, these by Gradl seem abnormally open and lyrical. They appear to be dancing on the page, instead of sitting. Please keep in mind that Gradl created only the embellished initials. All other characters supplied were theorized by HiH, including the accented initials. Orn.1 (unicode E004) is based on a jeweled gold clasp designed by Gradl (please take a look at Gallery Image on Myfonts.com). Likewise consisted of are an art nouveau woman's face, a swan and the face from Munch's "Shriek", from scans of old printer's ornaments.
