The city of Rio de Janeiro, with its perpetual curves and all year long summer weather condition provided the constraints and requirements of this typeface.
From there, it evolved to be a workhorse, with 8 weights from Thin to Black and matching true italics. It simply needed to have the functions that all us designers have grown to love, such as alternate letters (a, g and r for the romans), tabular and proportional figures in lining and oldstyle set-ups in addition to little caps, portions and all that jazz (I imply, samba).
And it required to be identifiable and unique. For that, style functions like tapered R legs, capitals with timeless percentages and calligraphic surfaces on the terminals proved crucial.
And last, however not least, like Rio, it had to welcome lots of cultures.
We pertained to believe of it as the "Typeface from Ipanema", with a timeless, timeless look, swinging beauty and cheerful attitude.
