Guanabara Sans is a sans serif typeface household. This typeface has sixteen styles and was published by Plau.

Guanabara is the third release of Plau Type Foundry (formerly understood as Niramekko). It started from the requirement of a wayfinding typeface that had character enough to be the brand name typeface for a city.

The city of Rio de Janeiro, with its nonstop curves and all year long summer season weather offered the restrictions and requirements of this typeface.

From there, it developed to be a workhorse, with 8 weights from Thin to Black and matching true italics. It simply needed to have the functions that all us designers have grown to enjoy, such as alternate letters (a, g and r for the romans), tabular and proportional figures in lining and oldstyle set-ups along with little caps, portions and all that jazz (I imply, samba).
And it required to be identifiable and distinct. For that, style functions like tapered R legs, capitals with timeless percentages and calligraphic finishes on the terminals proved crucial.

.

And last, however not least, like Rio, it needed to welcome many cultures.

.

We concerned consider it as the "Typeface from Ipanema", with a traditional, ageless appearance, swinging elegance and joyful attitude.
