Heisei Kaku Gothic was one of the very first typeface households developed by a group of type foundries formed by the Japanese Standards Association (JSA). In 1988, a font advancement project was begun by the Font Development and Promo Center (FDPC), which was formed as an affiliate of the JSA. A type design competitors was held for Gothic typefaces and a design proposed by Nippon Typewriter Co., Ltd. (which later ended up being Canon N.T.C., Inc.) was chosen. Heisei Kaku Gothic is a contemporary Gothic, or sans-serif, design whose kanji glyphs have easy stroke shapes. Still, its hiragana and katakana characters have discreetly curved strokes, offering a good balance between simplified and standard letterform construction. The basic weight W5 is developed for usage with Heisei Mincho W3.

Heisei Maru Gothic was the second typeface family established by a group of type foundries formed by the Japanese Standards Association. The advancement project started in 1989, when the Font Development and Promo Center, an affiliate of the JSA, chose Sha-Ken Co., Ltd. to be the designer. Heisei Maru Gothic is a conventional round gothic typeface with relatively bigger counter-spaces, which offers it a type of openness and brightness. Unneeded subtle stroke functions are avoided to optimize printing on low-resolution output devices. Two weights are available.

Heisei Mincho was one of the very first typeface households developed by a group of type foundries formed by the Japanese Standards Association (JSA). In 1988, a font advancement project was started by the Font style Development and Promo Center (FDPC), which was formed as an affiliate of the JSA. A type design competitors was held for Mincho typefaces and style proposed by Ryobi Imagix Co. was elected. Heisei Mincho is a modern-day Mincho style with reasonably bigger counter-spaces and simplified strokes composed of lots of straight lines. For better reproduction on low-resolution output devices, its horizontal stroke width is set heavier than other standard Mincho typefaces. Lighter weights of Heisei Mincho such as W3 appropriate for printing books and workplace documents.
