Helvetica grew in popularity throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and more versions of the household were presented. This led to vast confusion: the exact same weight is frequently referred to by 2 different names, design functions typically vary from one face to another, therefore on.

In the early 1980s, Linotype corrected this circumstance by redrawing the whole Helvetica family. Differences in alignment were fixed, subtle features were made constant from one face to another, and all the weights and widths were designed to collaborate as one family.

This new drawing is called Neue Helvetica (German for New Helvetica), and incorporates an easy-to-use numbering system to identify different styles and weights.
