The name was changed to Helvetica (an adjustment of Helvetia, the Latin name for Switzerland) by Walter Cunz when D. Stempel AG, a significant shareholder in Haas, remodelled the design for Linotype GmbH in Frankfurt, a major shareholder in Stempel. The Mergenthaler Linotype Business in New York City, then a major shareholder of Linotype GmbH, embraced the design, and it rapidly became the most popular sanserif on the planet, replacing Futura.
Helvetica is designed as a strong central series, with condensed and extended forms and severe weights adjusted and added later, a system which matched Linotype mechanical limitations and marketing viewpoint, however which led to a household of weights that were not also collaborated as they may have been.
Linotype's minimal licensing required a large number of unapproved copies of Helvetica, none of which may be viewed as an improvement.
