The stereotypical sex kitten, Brigitte Bardot was the first foreign-language star ever to achieve a level of worldwide success equivalent to America's most popular homegrown skills. While the large majority of her movement pictures stopped working to rank even remotely close to the finest of her native France's prodigious New Wave-era output, they showed a significant breakthrough in establishing a market for foreign movies in English-speaking nations; indeed, for all of the honor deservedly heaped on the more gifted actors and directors of her day, perhaps no other factor was more essential to the significant success of world cinema than Bardot's sultry allure.
