Ionic No5 is a refresh of a timeless Linotype Clarendon-style serif, another brought back timeless from the Monotype library, just like the recent updates to Walbaum and Helvetica Now. The original typeface was created to be printed and read at little sizes, popular with papers in the 20th Century at its birth. The remediation and improvement of this typeface has bestowed a higher sense of clarity and directness, wisely stylish, and an entirely fascinating appeal.

Because these designs were so popular for books and newspapers for so long we associate them with being editorial or bookish, not dull, however thoughtful. Designers today can use that association to their benefit as a visual shortcut to communicate comparable meaning and tone. More attention was provided on modernising the typeface with valuable use and the introduction of sharp edges & & surfaces.

The thinnest weights can provide a dancing typewriter visual, being low stroke contrast. The heavy weights have an undeniable existence on the page. Overall, the typeface has a richness and almost illustrative quality about it. The real depth of Ionic No. 5 might make it possible for each weight to be a poster by itself.
