ITC Avant Garde Gothic was created by Edward Benguiat, André Gürtler, Herb Lubalin, Tom Carnase, Erich Gschwind, Christian Mengelt and published by ITC. ITC Avant Garde Gothic contains 40 styles and family bundle choices. The typeface is currently # 15 inp > ITC Avant Garde Gothic is a font family based on the logo font style utilized in the Avant Garde publication. Herb Lubalin devised the logo design idea and its buddy headline typeface, then he and Tom Carnase, a partner in Lubalin's style firm, collaborated to change the idea into a full-fledged typeface.

The condensed font styles were drawn by Ed Benguiat in 1974, and the obliques were developed by André Gürtler, Erich Gschwind and Christian Mengelt in 1977.

The initial designs consist of one version for setting headings and one for text copy. However, in the preliminary digitization, only the text style was chosen, and the ligatures and alternate characters were not included.

The font family includes 5 weights (4 for condensed), with complementary obliques for best width fonts.

When ITC launched the OpenType version of the font, the initial 33 alternate characters and ligatures, plus additional characters were consisted of.
