ITC Mona Lisa remains in the ancestral tree of modern-day types such as Bodoni, Didot, and Walbaum, as evidenced by its strong contrast in between thin and thick letter strokes.
The elegant gown of the upgraded typeface is a good change from the stark sophistication of its forbears, making it a good accompanying display letter (it shouldn't be set smaller sized than 24-point). ITC Mona Lisa Solid is, extremely simply, a 1992 variation on ITC Mona Lisa Recut.
Most open or inline faces have been developed as permutations of their strong precursors, typically by the designer of the initial face. In this case, however, a graphic designer proposed a strong version after filling out the open spaces with a marker.
