Joe182 was called after the environment of the streets of New York City in the 1970s and 80s, where this script could be seen on practically every street corner in the city's neighborhoods.

Joe182 also utilized markers, which influenced the designer and specified the character of the typeface.
The font style is mostly fit for headlines, posters and short sentences. The character set supports most European languages and consists of ligatures along with alternative characters.
