Lapis ProDesigner: Jim Rimmer
Publisher: Canada Type
Lapis Pro was created by Jim Rimmer and published by Canada Type. Lapis Pro includes 6 designs and family plan options. p > Lapis was Jim Rimmer's venture into an area he had actually earlier explored with his Lancelot and Fellowship faces. This time he remained a lot longer, dug quite deep, and had a lot of fun in there. The end result is the sort of mosaic of impacts just a man like Jim might think about, collect, manage and use in a way that ultimately makes sense and works as a type family.

On the surface area Lapis seems like something that can be billed as what Jim would have called an 'marketing text face'. However under the hood, it's a whole other story. On top of the calligraphic, nib-driven base Jim generally used in his faces, Lapis shows a lot of typographic qualities from a range of categories, from Egyptian to Latin, from blackletter angularity to Dutch-like curvature, with a total stress even similar to wood type. There are some Goudy-informed shapes that somehow fit comfortably within all this. Then it's all strung together with a mix of wedged, tapered and leaning serifs, positioned with accuracy to expose skilled spontaneity and a great command of directing the forms through counterspace.

In the fall of 2013, the Lapis typefaces were scrutinized and remastered into versatile entertainers for sizes big and small. The three weights and their italic counterparts have been fine-tuned and broadened throughout the board to include small caps, alternates, ligatures, ordinals, case-sensitive kinds, 6 sort of figures, automated portions, and a character set that covers an extended series of Latin languages. Each of the Lapis Pro fonts includes over 760 glyphs.

For more information on the fonts' functions, text and display specimens and print tests, consult the Lapis Pro PDF availabe in the Gallery area of this page.

20% of Lapis Pro's profits will be donated to the Canada Type Scholarship Fund, supporting higher typography education in Canada.
