Goudy Modern/Open was developed by Frederic Goudy, who was inspired by the caption of a French inscription. It is Goudy's very first effort at a "modern-day" face, however with less contrast and rigidity usually found in Bodoni design Modern faces.
Goudy Modern was created later in 1918 after viewing an evidence of Goudy Open with the line completed. Not a real contemporary face, however still a Goudy classic.
The Pro variations consist of ligatures, varieties of characters and Main European character sets.
