Frederic Goudy created Powell for a "Mr. Powell" of the Mandel Brothers Chicago department shop in 1907. This face bears resemblance to Pabst however with a larger lowercase and much shorter descenders. This face resembles the copy of Goudy hand lettering launched by Inland Foundry in 1902. The identifying of the font style Hearst (P22 Kane) was the reason for some controversy. Powell was Goudy's recovering of his own lettering style. The italic was created by the Lanston Illustration office.
