‘‘ Mariamne 'is an original style by Alex Kaczun. It is a classy, contemporary and traditional analysis based on and imitated his successful "Contax Pro" and "New Age Gothic" typeface series. As such, it has generous proportions with clean, crisp lines-- preferably suited for easy reading and long lines of copy.
Alex felt that the skeleton for "Contax" was completely matched to change the design into a contemporary variation of ‘‘ old-style', rather reminiscent of German Black Letter. Various adjustments where made to the body percentages, stems and forms. Real ‘‘ old-style' serifs and unusual ‘‘ cross-strokes 'where included for a touch of difference. The ‘‘ cross-strokes' where added at exactly visual mid-point on the overall heights. This offers the typeface a romantic, female-like quality to the total style. Strong, yet fragile. Aesthetically promoting in look and function. The outcome is a really unique transitional and modern design.
Unlike other typefaces, ‘‘ Mariamne' includes consistent stems throughout the capitals, lower case and figures. This provides the design a consistent appearance in general color and strength. There is an ideal visual balance in between inter-letter spacing, stem weights and percentages. The accents are similarly large, bold and command attention. This font consists of a big ‘‘ Pro' character set, which supports most Central European and many Eastern European languages. As a result, the style is preferably matched for display screen copy along with text composition. In the near future, Alex plans to expand the typeface series to include a light and heavy weight, along with real italics.
