The metal cuts of Mauritius appear to have been hurried in Weber's desperation to stay afloat. So the only impressions left of the metal type, the sole records staying of this design, show significant problems. Some can be associated to technological constraints, but some problems in colour, accuracy and fitting are likewise rather obvious, particularly in Mauritius Kursiv, the italic metal cut.
This digital version is the outcome of consuming over an excellent designer's final type design effort, and trying to comprehend the reasons behind its disappearing from typography's cumulative mind. While that understanding remains for the many part elusive, the imaginative and technical work done on these typefaces produced very concrete results. All the obvious issues in the metal types were fixed, the style was broadened into a bigger household of 3 weights and two widths, and plenty of 21st century bells and whistles were added.
