Created by Gabriel Meave, Mexica is a screen serif font household. This typeface has nine designs and was released by Sudtipos.

Mexica is a typographic homage to Nahuatl, the tongue of the Aztecs, but also the lingua franca of ancient Mexico. 'Mexica' is not just the feminized, latinized kind of the word 'Mexico', however also the name of the residents of this location: the Me-xic-cah.

.

Nahuatl, when composed in the Latin alphabet, abounds in diagonal letter shapes: XYZ are common in its classic orthography, just as KW remain in its contemporary one. This visual feature is further improved by the lack of some rounded letters such as BDG that depict inexistent noises in this millenarian tongue. Besides, Nahuatl is language with a tendency to form long words that offer the text quite an unique look, unlike English, for circumstances, with its abundance of brief words.

.

Mexica was designed to look well in all these contexts, and to carry out in addition to a contemporary, bold, stylish serif type household, with several weights for text and display screen composition. Even more, its terminals and general structure-- devoid nearly entirely of straight lines-- are influenced by the angled architecture and decoration of the ancient city of Mexico- Tenochtitlan.

.

Mexica received an Award of Quality at the Type Directors Club of New york city annual competition.
