In the city of Millbrae (simply South of San Francisco in San Mateo County, California) stands a workplace building which formerly housed the Millbrae Theater. California has the distinction of protecting artifacts of its past, unlike many other portions of the US, and the perpendicular "Millbrae" indication with its neon tubes and Art Deco lettering is still connected to the refurbished structure.
Gene Gable (a good friend of type designer Jeff Levine) took an image of the sign and sent it along as just a picture of terrific lettering of the past to take pleasure in, however it set off the inspiration to create the namesake typeface Millbrae JNL.
