From the early 1930s through World War II, there were about 200 professional hand letterers operating in New York City alone. This profession saw its death with the arrival of image lettering, and after digital typography, ended up being essentially extinct. The odd method in which the Bluemlein scripts were assembled and produced - by gathering different signatures and after that constructing complete alphabets from them - is an interesting calligraphic experience. Since the set of constructed styles looked nothing like the original signatures, fictitious names were assigned to the new script typefaces.
