Typefaces without serifs were known in nineteenth-century England as Grotesque (or Grotesk in German) due to the fact that they appeared so uncommon to the majority of readers. Monotype Grotesque is a simple 1926 design that is amongst the earliest sans serifs cut for hot-metal maker typesetting.

Its basic, tidy lines make it open for text usage, and the condensed and extended versions are helpful for shorter text and screen use.
