For decades, visitors to Times Square might search for and check out the red-hot news flashes that crossed a huge electric indication on the face of the old New york city Times Building (now understood simply as One Times Square).

According to Wikipedia's post on OneTimes Square:

.

"On November 6, 1928, an electronic news ticker understood as the Motograph News flash (colloquially known as the "zipper") was presented near the base of the structure. The zipper originally included 14,800 light bulbs and a chain conveyor system; specific letter components (a kind of movable type) were packed into frames to define news headings. As the frames moved along the conveyor, the letters themselves set off electrical contacts which lit the external bulbs (the zipper has because been updated to use modern-day LED innovation)."

.

An example of this was seen in the 1933 Warner Bothers movie "Image Snatcher" starring James Cagney. This example inspired Moving Headings JNL.
