From the early 1930s through The second world war, there were about 200 expert hand letterers working in New york city City alone. This profession saw its death with the introduction of picture lettering, and after digital typography, became virtually extinct. The odd method which the Bluemlein scripts were assembled and produced - by collecting various signatures and then developing complete alphabets from them - is an interesting calligraphic adventure.
