From the early 1930s through World War II, there were about 200 professional hand letterers working in New york city City alone. This occupation saw its death with the introduction of photo lettering, and after digital typography, became essentially extinct. The odd method in which the Bluemlein scripts were put together and produced - by collecting various signatures and after that developing complete alphabets from them - is an interesting calligraphic experience. Because the set of constructed designs looked absolutely nothing like the original signatures, fictitious names were appointed to the new script typefaces. The typeface designs were then showcased in Higgins Ink catalogs.
