Developed by Christian Thalmann, Overbold is a serif font family. This typeface has two styles and was released by Catharsis Fonts.

Overbold is an unapologetic display screen typeface influenced by an illustration in Eric Gill's Essay on Typography (p. 51), in which he demonstrates "how not to make letters". In specific, he reveals that increasing the weight of the downstroke in a serif "A" without structural changes yields a ridiculous, "overbold" result. I found the letter so charming that I decided to blatantly disregard Gill's knowledge and draw a whole overbold typeface. Here is the result. I'm not sorry.

Overbold features extensive glyph protection in Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic. Have a look at the Greek-- it's most likely the best part of the typeface! Moreover, stylistic set SS01 offers an alternate ampersand, SS02 comprises baby letterforms, and SS03 grants merciful alternatives for the three strangest overbold capitals. The infant forms are also readily available as a spin-off typeface for convenience.

Have fun with Overbold! I certainly did.

I am grateful to the practical souls on the TypeDrawers and Typographie.info online forums for encouragement and positive feedback, and to the Glyphs group for their great type editor. Overbold is committed to my son Marius.
