The Larkin Company started as a soap business in the late 1800s and eventually turned into a massive mail-order and store which manufactured and offered a large range of products. The Buffalo, New york city based Larkin Soap Company was one of the very first to provide marketing 'premiums' to its clients to encourage sales. This marketing proved so successful that The Larkin Company began its own pottery to produce China and later furniture and other products which became items themselves.

One of the Larkin Business's star salesmen and exectutives retired early in 1893 to begin his own endeavor. Elbert Hubbard integrated his remarkable salesmanship with his love of the Arts and Crafts motion to discovered the popular Roycroft movement based in East Aurora New York.

The other executives in the Larkin Business enlisted Frank Lloyd Wright to create the Larkin Administration building in addition to several residences for numerous family members of the Larkin executives, most significantly Darwin D. Martin.
