Phiz is a diverse suite of 27 decorative typefaces all based upon Shinntype's Figgins Sans Additional Bold.
There are 4 sub-families: Traditional (9 typefaces), Rounded (7 typefaces), Rough (4 font styles) and Particles (7 typefaces).
.While the Timeless designs hark back to the 19th century and the Rounded and Rough styles are completely modern, the Particles designs originate from the future. These irregular type designs occupy an unique niche-- neither casual and hand-drawn, nor mimicing distressed printing (e.g. the "rusty" appearance). They were conceived and executed as intricate algorithmically-generated graphic treatments, in which repeated elements were artfully used to the Sans capitals and manually nuanced. As such they likewise differ substantially from textured glyph shapes that have been cut out from larger pattern fields, for the constituent particles are disposed in relation to the particular shape of each character they define.
.The caps-with-small-caps format was picked for two reasons. First of all, entitling display use is primarily capitals, and secondly, rather like optical scaling, having the exact same resolution of texture available in two various "sizes" (upper and lower case) need to show useful in the hierarchy of page design-- not primarily for setting upper and lower case text as caps-with-small-capitals, although this is obviously an option. Figures and significant symbols (punctuation and currency) are offered in both cap and small cap height.
.All Phiz fonts have the same metrics and kerning, helping with layering.
