The initial source of style for Sign Sans JNL was an image online of an old New York drinking establishment called the Lenox Lounge.

The metal channels enclosing the neon had an uncommon "feel" to some of the letters. While the original E, G and U of the sign looked ‘‘ intriguing', they didn't rather fit the font style's layout.

Those letters were ditched for more standard versions of them.
